The Loktak Inland Waterways Improvement Project was approved by the Ministry of Shipping in November 2019. This project is being pushed with the claims of promoting tourism and hence creation of jobs, and providing connectivity in the North-Eastern States. However, analysis of the Detailed Project Report (DPR) brings to the fore not only the inadequacy of the DPR for addressing some of the key issues but also the fact that the project is likely to have severe impacts on the livelihoods of the fishing community and even though this project promises job creation through enhancement of tourism, it is likely to destroy the very things that make the Loktak Lake an ecological wonder and an attractive tourist destination.
